Angry Letter to Western Digital

I’m a little scared of the new backend of Wordpress 2.7.1 and don’t intend to learn it just now, so I am doing the most simple thing I know. Post.

Over the weekend I bought a Western Digital 1TB My Book Home Edition from Officeworks. It was cheap. Real cheap. But sometimes, I guess you get what you paid for, and in my case I think by the end of the week I will be returning my said item. It’s been shit.

First of all, the drive is unrecognised on my 2007/8 Macbook Pro OSx Leopard. By chance (or miracle) I got it to work once with continual rebooting on my part! And it hasn’t worked since. Now the lights aren’t even coming up – I’ve tried several outlets and even the wall plug. Still nothing.

I contacted WD who told me to hook up my usb and update the firmware and stuff… HOW!? It’s recognised my USB connection NEVER as opposed to my ONCE with Firewire! Enough ranting. I’ll just post the angry letter I just sent WD.

Oh, and I most definitly don’t recommend WD external hard drives. I’ll update this post should they resolve my issue or the drive starts working properly from here on. But I ain’t holding my breath.

My hard drive worked ONCE! I continuously rebooted my computer and it worked just ONCE with my Firewire and never with my USB!

Your suggested solution failed as the hard drive was never detected when hooked up with the USB. Therefore, I have been unable to install the suggested drivers.

Tonight I tried to backup again, this time not even the power would turn on. None of the lights turn on. Like last time I continuously restarted, and nothing.

I find WD’s support to be very average. The “thread” style of questions is intriguing, however confusing and thus flawed. The UI of your site’s Help section is disorganised and useless. I’m sure I am not the first customer to be upset and definitely not the last.

I researched what other users in my situation have done over the internet and have found many many others in the same situation as I over the last year! In all of the three days of having purchased this item I’ve been completely unsatisfied! This has been really frustrating and by far the worst external hard drive I have ever used! WD should release products they KNOW works – even now you would think with such a faulty product there would be a recall!

I will never be purchasing another Western Digital external hard drive – especially not the My Book series.

I hope you have other suggested solutions to my HDD issue, as I don’t know what to do with my dud paperweight.

Back

Just got back to Sydney yesterday afternoon.

My first 24 hours have involved food (tho not meat pies unfortunately) and catching up with some family and family friends. So much has changed – no, I have changed so much since my last post, and most definitly since I was last here.

I actually don’t feel like this is home anymore. It’s a weird limbo, cos I’m continuously checin in with the Sydney I’d imagined and missed whilst overseas, and it’s nothing like it now. Feels bigger, dirtier, and flatter since I was last here. Then again it could be because we spent so much time in the Bankstown and Canterbury areas where I’d grown up. It hasn’t been the same for about a decade or more. Things look like they are falling apart- people keep moving out of the area.

It was so funny and embarrassing listening to my parents talk to one another – in one hour they’d made so many more racist jokes and remarks than I had heard in the entire year that I had spent in Canada! So brutal.

I have so much crap to organise here, and I really don’t want to waste my time doing that. My parents moved to a new house and it looks like much of the renovations and re-organisation has already taken place, but NONE of my stuff has been unpacked… So I have to start from scratch and throw out pretty much most things I don’t need.

Also, I don’t like my new bed here. The one I had in Vancouver was soooooooo good. This one is too hard and cold.

Things should look up later today – going to catch up with friends!

Love you all!!!

Life Update

The list of things to do grows, yet again.

Sigh.

Going home soon. So much uncertainty in the air, it’s already killing me. I don’t plan to leave for another two months at least.
I wish I had more reason to be in one place or another. Hmmm, maybe “reason” is the wrong word.

This last week I’ve figured out a few things I want, and it’s kinda scary. I think I am entering a new time in my life… yet again.

Hmmm, this post seems to be getting more and more Emo. I will try not to derail into a emotional mess of multisyllabal words sputtering into the interweb as a post of confusion, pain, despair etc etc etc. Oh look. Too late.

Seriously though. I think I need some time to chill out and gather my thoughts. Develop some patience. Patience especially. Also, open mindedness… Is that one word. Also, vocabulary.

Sigh.

Australian Music Fans Today

Psychiatrists assessing their patients should consider their music taste in their assessment, says a study published in the “Australasian Psychiatry”. It found that people who listen to pop music are insecure about their sexuality, jazz types are loners and misfits, rap and metal fans are more likely to drive drunk and have unprotected sex, while fans of metal, trance and emo are more likely to suicide.

Now there’s a very valid use of scientific funding… not. Lifted from The Music.
